You probably know that I'm a huge fan of remote si

You probably know that I'm a huge fan of remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) - it's affordable, flexible, and only requires a stable connection and your favourite headphones!

But what about some other commonly used forms of interpreting? 🤔

🎧 Simultaneous interpreting is not to be confused with remote simultaneous interpreting! This is when I interpret into a microphone as the speaker talks. The audience members needing interpretation wear headphones allowing them to hear me - they usually don’t see me, because I work from a soundproof interpreting booth. 🤫

Because interpreting requires so much concentration, my colleague and I will switch every 30 minutes or so to continue providing the best possible interpretation!

🎙 Conversely, in consecutive interpreting, I'll be on stage or at a podium in front of the audience. The speaker and I will take turns talking - I wait for them to pause and then interpret what they said.
This obviously increases the length of time it takes for the message to be delivered, so it is usually better-suited to shorter speeches!

And similarly to simultaneous interpreting, my colleague and I will switch approximately every 30 minutes to keep providing the best interpretation.

As interpreters, I think we've all experienced moments encountering words with some very different meanings when heard in different languages! 🤭

For example, did you know the word 'dai' in Italian means an encouragement you might shout to your friends? Any English speakers in earshot who hear your cheering might interpret it quite differently! 😱

As an interpreter, my work doesn't begin and end at linguistic skills. 🎙

Along with a deep understanding of multiple languages, I have to think on my feet, understand cultural differences, and have strong social skills - to be able to smooth over any potential unfortunate situations like the above!

Ready... steady... re-start for September!

This must be one of my favourite times of the year. ❤️ Whilst January may seem like the typical time to take stock and start afresh, there's something about September that makes it feel like the perfect moment to reset and refocus on the rest of the year ahead. 🗓️

As the summer draws to a close, the autumn air is filled with a sense of the new - change, excitement and optimism. 🍁 The perfect time for businesses, including my own, to refocus on their goals so we can finish 2023 strong.

This summer, indeed, has unfolded a vibrant mosaic of experiences for me.

Being in Syracuse, the chief Greek city of ancient Sicily, I've found the rhythm of my professional life organically syncing with the leisurely pulse of summer.

My hometown, with its stunning coastline, has always been a treat for the eyes. ✨
The meeting at the sea early in the morning, the casual chats with digital nomads from all over the world, the exchange of valuable tips, the bond of shared experiences - it's networking in its most enjoyable form. And did I mention all this happens while sunbathing? 😉

'Workcations' are definitely in trend, but I've realised it's more than just about changing the location of work.

As the LinkedIn newsletter suggested, summertime does bring a refresh to our work routines and our approach to professional life.

It's about embracing a different perspective, reshaping your thinking, and finding joy in these new encounters.

How do I balance work and life as an interpreter?

If there's one tightrope walk I've been mastering over the years, it's balancing work with life. We all know the interpreting industry doesn't exactly come with a 9-to-5 tag. The unpredictable hours, the 'just one more assignment' mindset, the last-minute preps... Oh, the thrill of it!

But here's the thing: as much as I adore my profession, it's important for me to remember that there's a world beyond the booth, the translations, and the late-night prepping. A world filled with laughter, hobbies, families, and those little moments that make life... well, LIFE.

Finding that balance wasn't always easy. There were times I'd be juggling a complex assignment while dreaming of that weekend getaway. But every stumble taught me a lesson about setting boundaries, knowing when to say 'no', and understanding the value of 'me' time in keeping the creative juices flowing.

What really worked for me was establishing clear lines between my professional and personal life. I started scheduling my work, yes, even the 'exciting' assignments. I made a pact with myself - beyond a certain hour, work emails and texts would have to wait till the next day. 🕰️

And guess what? The world didn't end! My clients understood, and my work didn't suffer. In fact, I felt more energised, more focused, and more passionate about my assignments when I returned to them after a good break.

So, to everyone struggling work-life balance, I want to say this: It's okay to take a break. It's okay to prioritise your personal time. And most importantly, it's okay to seek balance. 😉

Happy Friday, everyone!

I wanted to share with you a brilliant event at which I recently worked, located at one of London's most iconic buildings, the Gherkin.

From the moment you step into the Gherkin, you are met with a blend of modernity and elegance that is truly unique. Its distinct structure, reminiscent of a gigantic glass cucumber rising into the sky, provides an almost futuristic vibe. Yet inside, it's all about style and comfort.

I had the privilege to be introduced to a phenomenal speaker, Renato Mosca, Founder and Senior Partner of Training Luxury, who held the audience captive with his engaging and motivational style.

Renato, in his inimitable way, shared fascinating stories about
luxury and beauty, even discussing how the advanced derma sector could borrow key ideas from the luxury industry. His insights were eye-opening, revealing how these concepts could transform how patients perceive the industry, ultimately attracting more business and fostering loyalty.

Amidst the excitement and flurry of activity, he graciously shared the highlights of his speech with me. From captivating anecdotes to a
tribute to the legendary Coco Chanel, and even a tantalising mention of the
elusive “potion of immortality,” Renato’s insights were priceless.

This pre-speech briefing was hugely valuable to me as an interpreter.
It allowed me to build a mental sequence of images linked to his speech,
ensuring that my translation into English truly captured the essence of his
message.

As a member of the project management team, ensuring the flawless
execution of the event from an AV and interpreting standpoint was hugely
important to me, so witnessing the overwhelmingly positive reactions from our diverse guests left me in awe.

They couldn't stop complimenting Renato's top-notch speech, a testament to his incredible ability to engage an audience.

Being part of this event was a fantastic experience, and I will cherish the memories for years to come!

Isn’t it brilliant when a seemingly casual email

Isn’t it brilliant when a seemingly casual email enquiry turns into an inspiring and truly wonderful assignment?

Last year, I received an email from BAFTA asking me to interpret for an interview they were recording with a film director.

I jumped at the opportunity, but in my heart, I presumed the request had been sent to many other interpreters and agencies and they wouldn’t follow up the contact.

However, to my surprise, and happiness, they did – and I was thrilled!

The interview was with the acclaimed Italian film director and screenwriter, Giuseppe Tornatore, who is perhaps most well-known for his Oscar-winning movie, Cinema Paradiso. It was to focus on Giuseppe’s documentary Ennio about Italian composer, Ennio Morricone.

The comment I received from the director, Ian, straight after the interview put a huge smile on my face:

“It was a pleasure meeting you too. No feedback beyond my thinking you did a sterling job. I am always amazed at the skill in translating live. Not an easy task. I especially liked your bringing Giuseppe 's humour through in your conversation.”

I was also delighted to receive super feedback from Kyle (visit my website to access the article)

So, thank you, BAFTA, for bringing me this wonderful assignment which truly brightened up my month! What work do you have coming up, that you expect will bring a smile to your face?
