I always like to give an honest account of my life as an interpreter, and I’m conscious that there’s an unsung hero behind every successful interpreting assignment.

The project manager.

As a client, if you’ve been lucky enough to have only experienced smoothly-run events, then it’s unlikely you know who the project manager is!

The thing is – it’s not just luck that they’ve run smoothly!

Project managers are the glue that holds every event together. The best ones are physically present at the event, taking care of everything from dietary requirements of attendees to regular water for interpreters (sound minor but it’s SO important.)

As an interpreter I’ve worked on both sides for agencies and for my direct clients, so I can attest to the work that project managers do backstage͟, and I can appreciate their role when, as an interpreter, I’m on the receiving end of their thoughtful service.

I was only the interpreter

At face value, that’s quite a demoralising sentence, but seen in context, it was a compliment.

At a recent assignment, I was interpreting for the management team of an investment business.

Having worked in this arena for many years, and with a lot of experience interpreting for asset management equity firms, I was able to call on this experience to provide guidance here and there (only when asked by the client, of course!)

At the end of the meeting, the prospective client asked me my role within the company and how long I’d been in asset management. When she found out I was “only” the interpreter, she was suitably impressed.

💡 Why am I posting this? To impress upon businesses the importance of using interpreters with relevant experience and knowledge.

The support and expertise that a suitably qualified interpreter can provide makes them almost an extra team member when you need to pull out all the stops.

Not much budget - not (necessarily) a problem!

Something I hear a lot from event organisers is that the multilingual elements of events can be expensive. From finding the right interpreters to hiring equipment....it all adds up.

I’ve recently interpreted at events using a “tour guide” system for interpreting, and it’s been a lot of fun. 🎉

Wondering how it works? 🤔

Well, it does what it says on the tin, really: the interpreter accompanies delegates and interprets for them as they have their meetings, do tours of facilities, etc.

Each delegate has their own headset for their own language, so they have access to the same high-quality interpretation as usual.

I find it works brilliantly for smaller events, though for large scale events in big venues (with big background noise!) and hundreds of attendees, it’s not an option.

But then again, those sorts of events tend to have bigger budgets! 💵

I like to begin and end each day with a little time away from my phone - even if it's just five
minutes. It can be so easy to start scrolling through social media and emails before even getting out of bed, let alone while you're drinking your coffee. ☕

This morning, try leaving your phone on the other side of the room while you eat breakfast. 🥞
Try eating mindfully, or reading something offline. Start your day for you, rather than
immediately responding to external requests, and you'll find yourself in a far more peaceful and centred mindset as you begin your week. 📱

Translating press releases - the importance of promptness ⏰

We all know how temporary news is - in fact, in today’s social media society, news is even more transient than ever!

At Italianinterpreter.london we translate a lot of press releases. 📧

The one thing that my communications clients value over anything else is promptness. A 24-hour turnaround is vital in our whirlwind world.

Before writing this post, 🔍 I looked through my emails from several communications agencies I work with: “urgent” was the word I saw most often in the email chains!

Here are my two top tips for communications agencies who frequently require translations of their press releases:

🗓️ Make sure the timeline for final delivery is clearly communicated to you.
📚 Ensure you provide any and all reference material at the beginning of the process.

That way, everyone has clear and realistic expectations and time isn’t wasted on waiting for replies to queries. Follow these tips and your important news item won’t be out of date before it’s even online.

March is a month to celebrate women.

March is a month in which Italy along with the rest of the world celebrate women, with International Women’s Day.

Known as La Festa della Donna, this day in Italy has a symbolism more reminiscent of Mother’s Day. A feature of the day unique to Italy, is that often women – as well as men – gift flowers (mimose) to important women in their lives on this day, marking their colleagues and friends’ achievements, and as an act of solidarity, recognising the impact that they have made along with their value in society.

There are many fabulous women whom I’d like to honour on La Festa della Donna, I really am so fortunate to meet such inspiring women in my line of work.

One woman who has hugely inspired me, and to whom I would be delighted to gift flowers, is Nane Annan, widow of the former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Kofi Annan.

I had the pleasure of interpreting for Nane some years ago, at an assignment at the International Women’s House in Rome, and the assignment and her impact have stayed with me.

During the time her husband was in office, she focused in particular on developing programmes relating to girls’ education and women’s empowerment. I was lucky to interpret for her during a visit to the Women’s House, which provided shelter and a safe place for women who had been victims of acid attacks. Nane was poised, kind and genuine, and it was an honour to interpret for her: a true advocate of women and a real inspiration.

Memories of the assignment have, as you’d expect, stayed with me over the years, and I was delighted to read that the International Women’s House is still going from strength to strength, providing vital support and becoming a cultural engine for women’s actions.

While AI interpretation has entered the metaphorical “chat,” making some pretty significant advancements in recent years, many still prefer human interpreters (like me) for a good reason.

💡 Human expertise- As human interpreters, we connect with people in a way that AI can't match. We’re trained to pick up on all kinds of subtle cues, like body language, sarcasm, and cultural context, that are critical for conveying a message accurately. And when something unexpected comes up, like audio problems or interruptions, we’re ready to roll with it and ensure the interpretation stays on track.

3. Expected outcomes: What do you hope to achieve from the event? Knowing this helps me tailor my interpretation to support your goals.

4. Schedule: Can you give me the full schedule for the meeting or conference? This lets me plan logistics and language prep to ensure I'm ready to interpret at the right time and in the right place.

5. Extra info: Is there anything else I should know? Anything from the keynote speaker talking fast to a business meeting potentially getting tense - the more info you can give me, the better I can provide the best service.
