My career as an Italian interpreter

Over the course of my career, I’ve had the pleasure of working for household names and very accomplished people, from politicians to Popes to philanthropists.

I was thinking back on some of my favourite assignments over the last twenty years, and I’m so excited to see what’s coming next. Previously, I’ve worked with people like:

🎬 Julia Roberts & Nicholas Hoult, American actors
🇺🇳 Navanethem Pillay, UN High Commissioner
🇪🇺 David Maria Sassoli, President of the European Parliament
⚽ Francesco Totti, World Cup winner, & Andrea Pirlo, one of the world’s top footballers
🕊️ Betty Williams, Nobel Prize Winner for Peace

And so many more! One of the things I love most about my job is that someone new and unexpected is always just around the corner.
Will my next client be you?

Book a discovery call and let’s talk! 👋

Climate change

A topic that’s grown increasingly relevant to my work in recent years is the changing climate. ☀️

It’s rapidly become a pressing concern: our time to make a difference to the world by mitigating its effects is running out. ⌛ But that doesn’t mean we can’t make a difference if we act now.

And the UK and Italy will be key players in 2021: we’re the co-presidents of the COP26 summit beginning next week on Monday November 1st. This summit brings together the United Nations to reach an agreement on how we’ll be tackling climate change. 🌍

It’s most likely one of our last chances to prevent many of the worsening disasters we’ve already witnessed in the tragic events of this year – wildfires, flooding, hurricanes and more.

But we still have the opportunity to protect the planet. COP26 will be a major update to the Paris agreement and should see decisive action from many of the world’s major players in climate change. 🤝

It’s a dramatic political event that brings a chance to make a real difference for ourselves and our children – and I can’t wait to see how it plays out.
Will you be watching?

Lady Dior Event – Interpreting assignment in London!

Mid-September saw a truly incredible London Fashion Week. What a stunning way to welcome back in-person events! Every year I look forward to this fabulous glimpse into the minds of some of the most accomplished creatives in the world. Full of eminent names and rising stars, it’s an exhilarating look at the distinguished brands of the times. And during this time, I welcomed some of the most illustrious names in the fashion world into my own work.

I’m so proud to share that for my very first post-lockdown London event, I was selected by Christian Dior Couture UK for their Journées Savoir-Faire event to help showcase their iconic Lady Dior bag.

Attending the Journées Savoir-Faire as an Italian Interpreter for the House of Dior, has been one of my top highlights in my career so far!

Housed in Dior’s flagship Bond Street boutique, the consecutive interpreting assignment meant I interpreted for two Florentine Couture Artisans named Marco and Roberta. Between them, they have over forty years of experience designing and creating extremely limited pieces of art for Dior’s prominent VIPs. Marco and Roberta spearhead a team of twelve highly-specialized artisans in Florence: the best in the world at creating these beautiful, bespoke pieces.

The Himalayan Lady Dior bag (if you can call a bag!) takes the team one day for assembly, and three to four days to complete just one exquisite bag. The Journées Savoir-Faire demonstrated the craftsmanship that goes into each process for this truly iconic piece. I was found myself surrounded by the high society clientele all in awe of the world class bags and knowledge shared by Marco and Roberta.

These ‘pieces of art’ are highly prized by collectors’ for their beauty and rarity. The care their craftsmen put into them flowed out into the room: there was an inimitable atmosphere of excitement at this event. And it was such an honour to be at the centre of it all and experience this one-of-a-kind creative process taking place for myself.

Now, do you think I can get one for Christmas?

My first post-lockdown international business trip!

Along with my first London event, I also found myself heading to Basel, Switzerland for my first post-lockdown international business trip!

Those of you who have already travelled abroad post-lockdown will be familiar with the bag of mixed emotions about ensuring your vaccination passports and paperwork are all present and accounted for, and whether your documents will all be accepted as per usual at customs.

But I didn’t have to worry for long as it was like returning to an old friend, I interpreted for a Swiss multinational pharmaceutical company I’ve had the pleasure of working with for over a decade!

Holding a four-day medical conference in Basel, it was great to be back in a booth to interpret English to Italian and vice versa across the four days. The event allowed me to gather my thoughts and reflect on the impact Covid had as an Interpreter.

The realisation of the little things that make an event brought it home, how much I had missed it. This included ‘normal events’ like dinner with my colleagues, exchanging views on the day’s events and talks, and heading downstairs to see them at breakfast every morning. And rather than using WhatsApp when interpreting with my booth partner, we could communicate with simply a look when our turn to interpret came around – a seemingly tiny detail we truly value now we’ve experienced life without it.

Throughout the event, there was a true sense of camaraderie in the air. Everyone was in the same boat – delighted to see their colleagues and peers in person once again.

Although there’s still a long way to go, this event has been a portent of many more good things to come in the near future.

Let’s all continue keeping one another safe, so we can carry out all of those plans that have been on hold for so long.

I already can’t wait for my next trip to the airport – who knows where I’ll be heading next?

Working from home…..the debate continues

With this sudden whirlwind of travel after so long in my own office, it’s important to keep sight of the future of work as post-lockdown decisions are made. The question on everyone’s minds right now is that of whether we’ll be ‘working responsibly‘ from home or returning to the office full-time.

The recent McKinsey study covering the future of work after Covid-19 is a fascinating encapsulation of the situation. This which will affect the entire population, and it’s so worth the read!

A major debate is ongoing, regarding a proposed law granting employees the right to request remote work from day one on the job. Many people feel they prefer working from home, and only go to the office for collaborative reasons – increased creativity, ease of collaboration on key projects and so on.

Are you one of them?

However, people are also finding it reduces networking opportunities and career growth and is harmful to work-life balance.

It’s an age-old argument that has blazed into life in 2021. I’ve always loved my office, and personally thrive working from home – although the opportunity for frequent travel is one of the best parts of my job, and I can’t wait for it to become more frequent again. (I’m already missing Basel!) But if everyone begins working from home, what will happen to city centres and independent businesses that rely so strongly on commuters and foot traffic?

Both sides have strong points, and there’s data to back them both up – again, take a look at the McKinsey study for more details! The next few months will be pivotal in seeing how the future of working from home plays out.

Where do you stand on the debate?
