From courtrooms to cosmetics: Interpreting across industries this October

Life is rarely quiet (I like it best being busy!) and last month was indeed no exception.

The variety of industries in which I work never ceases to amaze me. Last month I worked for clients ranging from criminal justice to manufacturing; from technology to pest control! It has really kept me on my toes!

The month started with an in-depth and technical assignment in the legal sector, interpreting for a conference considering the criminal justice system in the UK and the criminal Italian justice system. As anticipated, the language was complex and specific, and preparation was key to this being a successful assignment.

An exciting client with whom I spent time in October was a testing centre for bearings used in wind turbines. Some of these bearings were up to two metres in diameter – absolutely enormous! It is always fascinating to dip my toes into different industries. As they say, “Every day is a learning day!”

I had to ensure I was on top form interpreting for an extremely fast and furious tech session for an IT products and services company with headquarters in the States. This particular session was following a merger with one of its competitors, and thank goodness I brought my A-game to work that day as it was definitely needed! Having many years’ experience interpreting for the IT sector held me in good stead, and whilst it was a demanding session, I was relieved to find it invigorating, rather than intimidating!

I enjoyed a couple of days being based in London, firstly immersed in the gritty business of pest control policy but finishing the month on a much more glamorous note, interpreting for a client in the beauty industry for a session on skin, collagen and holistic beauty solutions. Different ends of the spectrum, but all valued and interesting assignments!

What’s coming up in November and December? Travelling!

Assignments are taking me to Rome, Zurich, Dublin and of course London towards the end of the month. I always love the opportunity to take my interpretation skills on the road. Be sure to follow me on Instagram if you want to see photos from my adventures.

One upcoming project I’m especially excited about is a return engagement with a client in Ireland. I’ve worked with them many times before, and their events are always held at magnificent historic venues. I look forward to experiencing the beauty of Ireland again!

Spotlight on: Cinque Terre

Italy boasts an abundance of hidden treasures, places which you may not believe are real until you see them with your own eyes.

One such place is Cinque Terre. Have you heard of it? It’s such a beautiful spot I thought I’d transport us briefly, from the dark winter nights and chilly days into brighter, warmer climates, even if it is just through words on a page!

This iconic string of fishing villages on the Italian Riviera is one of my favourite escapes. With its cliffside homes, terraced vineyards, and crystal waters, Cinque Terre is a perfect blend of community, culture, and natural wonder. I’d love to hear about your own favourite towns in Italy.

These five charming hamlets: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, each offer a unique character and deep sense of community. But what makes Cinque Terre truly extraordinary is how it marries the tranquil simplicity of coastal life with the vibrancy of the Mediterranean, creating an experience that is both soothing and invigorating for all who venture there.

It is certainly one of my favourite places in Italy; not exactly an undiscovered gem (as it can be quite busy in summer) but certainly a place I’d recommend highly if you’re able to escape for a break.

Do you have a favourite place to visit in Italy? I’d love to hear about your most loved towns and cities; perhaps I’ll feature your favourite Italian place in future articles! (Thank you so much Laura for your suggestion!)

Regional Diversity in Italy

One of the most interesting aspects of interpreting in Italian is the diversity between regional cultures.

From the Sicilian dialect to Neapolitan pizza, Italy’s regions each have unique identities.

It’s so important for me to understand the local language, foods, etiquette, accents, and customs. This allows me to provide culturally attuned services that capture the true spirit of each area. There’s so much for me to constantly learn!

Italy is known for its rich diversity of regional cultures, traditions, dialects and cuisines. Unique to Italy when compared to other countries, however, is that each region has its own unique identity, which can be deeply rooted in history, geography and local customs.

For an interpreter this is particularly interesting, and an aspect of interpreting in Italian that should be considered for every assignment.

For example:

🗾 Italy is divided into 20 regions, each with its distinct cultural heritage. These regions have their own dialects, art, music and traditions.

🍝 Italian cuisine varies greatly from region to region. The types of pasta, sauces and ingredients differ and as an interpreter, these culinary nuances may need to be explained to clients during business meetings or culinary events.

🥳 Regions often have unique traditions and festivals. As an interpreter, translating the language but also the cultural significance behind these events is sometimes required.

💬 Many regions have their own dialects which can be quite different from standard Italian. Interpreters may need to be familiar with these regional dialects to effectively communicate with locals.

🏢 Being aware of regional business practices and etiquette is important for anyone working in Italy. Different regions may have specific ways of conducting meetings and negotiations and as an interpreter, it is important to be aware of these.

Understanding Italy’s incredible regional diversity is the key to providing services that resonate with the heart of Italy.

These variations in culture, language and customs can be seen as our guides to creating translations and interpretations that capture the true spirit of every region. Mastering these subtleties is the secret to ensuring our communication sings, whether it’s in a boardroom, welcoming tourists or celebrating the richness of Italian culture.

Fun fact: Italy is home to the world’s oldest university, the University of Bologna, which was founded in 1088.
