The Surge of Silent Seminars

It’s been interesting to see a marked rise in requests for providing silent seminar services over recent months.

A silent seminar, conference or workshop, is an event where attendees use wireless headphones to listen to the speaker or presenter. This allows for multiple presentations or discussions to take place simultaneously in the same physical space without causing audio interference. Each participant can choose the audio channel they want to listen to by selecting the corresponding channel on their headphones.

Silent seminars are becoming particularly popular in scenarios where space constraints or noise considerations make it challenging to conduct traditional presentations.

Interpreters can play a crucial role in making silent seminars accessible and inclusive for participants who speak different languages. Just like speakers or presenters, interpreters can have their own dedicated channels on the wireless headphone system and participants who need interpretation can switch to the appropriate channel to hear the content in their preferred language. Interpreters can also provide simultaneous interpretation in this manner.

Did you know I also provide event management services?

If you think a silent seminar might be an excellent solution for your next event, let’s talk – I’d love to help set this up.

Don’t let language barriers hinder your participants’ ability to access valuable content and insights: it’s an essential aspect of creating an inclusive and globally-minded event environment.

The Rise of the Workation

I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a large portion of July and August in Sicily with family this year, on what was a six-week workation. For me, it was a wonderful way to fulfil my professional responsibilities whilst also enjoying the benefits of a holiday.

This trend has gained momentum as remote work patterns and flexible schedules have become more prevalent, blurring the boundaries between traditional office settings and personal spaces. It’s true that working in a new, serene, environment is a great boost for productivity and creativity whilst taking advantage of the soothing atmosphere that a change of scenery offers.

However, whilst there are clear advantages to being able to adopt this working scenario, it is worth considering the potential downsides too. Striking the right balance between work and relaxation can be a challenge, as the pressure to remain engaged with work tasks can overshadow the true purpose of a vacation. It is also hard to detach from work commitments entirely, inadvertently leading to overwork and burnout. Finding a strategy that works effectively for you in this scenario is key.

Would I have a workation again? Yes – absolutely, but it’s worth acknowledging the undeniable value of taking a week or two solely dedicated to unwinding, allowing your mind to take a well-deserved opportunity to rejuvenate, without the constant pull of work-related thoughts.

When interpreters become an emergency service…

Whilst on holiday, I found myself unexpectedly stepping into the role of interpreter during a deeply sombre event, undertaking the difficult task of delivering some terribly sad news.

For any interpreter, these moments are undeniably intense and the weight of sorrow does linger, but being able to assist and convey the heartfelt empathy of the bereaved provided me with a sense of purpose and solace.

In addition, I was entrusted with translating some emotionally charged letters. Capturing the profound emotions and compassion inherent in these letters required a delicate touch, ensuring that every sentiment and nuance was faithfully conveyed through my translations. It’s during such times that the importance of interpretation extends beyond mere words, becoming a conduit for understanding, empathy and support across languages and cultures.

This experience serves as a poignant reminder of the role interpreters play in facilitating connection and compassion during life’s most challenging moments.

On a lighter note, I was also delighted to translate a speech for a father for his daughter’s wedding in Sicily. This was such an uplifting and joyous translation and it was a pleasure to undertake.

On reflection of these assignments, it occurred to me that for me, it doesn’t matter who my clients are – they could be famous movie directors, footballers, a large corporate firm, an individual in need, or Julia Roberts – I am there for each and every one, they are all important, and I take pride in providing superb service with every assignment I undertake. I like to think that it’s this level of service that means my clients are always happy with my work and it probably isn’t an accident that such a high proportion of my new business comes from referrals.

But don’t just take my word for it – you can read through many testimonials and Google reviews here.

I received some wonderful, appreciative correspondence from all these families after working with them this summer, and I’m delighted to be able to share this with you.

💭 Are the goals you’re working towards still 💭 Are the goals you’re working towards still what you truly want?

Sometimes we get so busy chasing the next milestone—at work, in life, or in our dreams—that we forget to check if it’s still the right path for us. If we don’t pause, we might end up feeling stuck or burned out.

👉 Success is reaching your goals.
👉 Happiness is loving what you’ve achieved.

Here’s a simple challenge for today:

1️⃣ Take a few minutes to think about your current goals.
2️⃣ Ask yourself: Are these goals taking me closer to what I really want in life?
3️⃣ Make one small change or action to stay on the right path.

Both success and happiness matter, but they work best when they go hand in hand. 🌈

What’s the most interesting industry I’ve work What’s the most interesting industry I’ve worked with? 🍫🌴⚖️

🤔 This question always gets me thinking because every industry offers its own surprises. From the precision of pharmaceuticals and legal to the fast-paced creativity of media, interpreting brings such diverse challenges and joys. Renewable energy, fashion, religious institutions—all these industries have taught me something unique about people, cultures, and the power of communication.

But if I’m honest, it’s not just the industry that makes the work fascinating. It’s the moments—the exchange of ideas, the breakthroughs in understanding, the connections that shape decisions and impact lives. For me, the “most interesting” is wherever people are willing to share their world and let me help bridge the gap! 💘

Whilst many people wind down towards Christmas, I always thrive on experiencing the opposite, and this week has been one of the busiest I have had for a long time!

I have been coming to Zurich at this time every year for as long as I can remember, to work with a wondertul client who treat me like one of their own, and it is a joy to work with them.
There is something about returning to a familiar area (I always stay at the same hotel, often visit the same restaurants and work with the same interpreting team) that makes the experience so relaxed and enjoyable.
I work on European Works Council meetings quite frequently, but this particular client is always brilliant to work with at these events - and not only because they provide the most delicious snacks!
Alongside the EWC meetings, which were enjoyable in themselves, I also managed to schedule a brilliant evening catching up with some colleagues at an amazing restaurant in the heart of Zurich, Fusio. It is such a cool place, with a brilliant vibe - I would highly recommend it if you are in Zurich.

What’s been the most unexpected industry or place you’ve worked in? I’d love to hear your stories! 🌟

Planning a multilingual event but unsure which int Planning a multilingual event but unsure which interpretation style will best serve your audience? Let’s break down the two most widely-known modes of interpreting:

🔄 Simultaneous Interpreting - “Translating while listening”
In this method, the interpreter translates the speaker’s words in real-time, often just a few seconds behind. This style is common in high-stakes settings like conferences, where speed and flow are essential. Imagine hearing the speaker and interpreter almost simultaneously—it’s a skill that takes intense focus and rapid mental processing.

⏱️ Consecutive Interpreting - “Listening, then translating”
Here, the interpreter listens to the speaker and waits until a pause (or after the full statement) to deliver the translation. This style is ideal for interviews, courtrooms, or smaller meetings, where there’s more room for pauses and detail.

Both styles require unique skill sets and can be chosen based on the needs of the setting and audience. 🌐

So next time you’re planning a multilingual event, consider which interpreting style best suits the occasion—speed or detail?

Can introverts excel in marketing? 🤔 People of Can introverts excel in marketing? 🤔

People often assume that marketing is all about being loud, outgoing, and always in the spotlight. But some of the best marketers are actually the quiet thinkers working behind the scenes.

In reality, marketing is not just about making noise—it’s about understanding people. Introverts are natural observers, skilled at reading between the lines and knowing when to speak and when to listen. They’re thoughtful planners, focusing on the details that make a message connect on a deeper level. They might not be the life of the party, but when it comes to building relationships and crafting strategies, introverts bring a unique strength in prioritising depth over volume.

So, do introverts make great marketers? Absolutely. They might approach it from a quieter, more reflective angle, but that’s what gives them their edge!
