Industry news to watch out for

It was recently announced that Ubiqus a leading global language service provider has joined up with Acolad to expand their reach, speed up delivery timelines, and to support clients in the best possible way. Between the two companies their technical skills, development in technology and vast capability of language solutions offers clients more than just the standard communication support. I look forward to seeing where their adventure takes them.

Boostlingo has also announced their acquisition of VoiceBoxer, a leader in interpretation management technology, a provider of RSI and whose products I use almost daily. This is big news in the world of interpretation, and it will be interesting to see what developments and advances this acquisition brings.

Top 5 things to consider when hiring a professional interpreter

We were recently contacted by a London brand design agency whose interpreter had let them down at the last minute. We were called upon at the eleventh hour to step in and assist with a business meeting for which interpretation services were required.

It led me to thinking that there are so many ways in which you can maximise the benefit from having a professional interpreter.

For us, preparation is key, and an interpreter should always have enough time to be fully briefed before undertaking any assignment.

So, here is my step-by-step guide to gaining maximum benefit from your professional interpreter.

1. Provide your interpreter with as much information as possible regarding the job: this might be about the company, the event or, if it’s a strategic meeting, the required outcome. The more material the interpreter can be briefed with, the better prepared they will be on the day. In the brief, along with logistical information, it is useful for the interpreter to be informed about the:

· Purpose of the event/meeting

· Size of room and number of people present

· Interpreting equipment to be used

· Presentations, minutes from past meetings, or agendas

2. Inform the interpreter of the dynamic of the meeting, what should they expect and is there any specific information that would be useful for them to know before the event/meeting starts? It is always good to avoid surprises!

3. Ensure that the interpreter arrives well in advance of the meeting or event. A rushed interpreter is not a happy interpreter!

4. Think of your interpreter not as an addition to your meeting, but as a linguistic partner. Engage with them fully and you will gain much more from them than just words and translation.

5. Think about the follow up after the event or meeting.

Your interpreter will understand the context of the event, and most interpreters are also translators, so they can translate conference documentation, minutes of meetings, contracts and other business documentation post the meeting.

Sometimes interpreters are considered the last piece of the puzzle, but on many occasions they receive words of appreciation for their hard work and even an applause!

Earlier this week I was interpreting remotely, and I was truly flattered to hear the speaker for a Pfizer event informing his audience that he had goosebumps knowing his speech was being interpreted into ten languages!

This is why I love what I do!

Interpreting for the IT industry: acronyms, jargon and nuance…

Over the last six months, I have been offering interpreting services for an American manufacturing company which is training their Italian staff in using SAP software. I have been interpreting for in depth training sessions in small groups for three to four people at a time, and also 1:1 training sessions, and now feel adept in using this software myself!

Interpreting for IT companies and especially for their training courses is something in which I have many years of experience, and it is certainly a niche market! The language is very specific and technical, and working with an interpreter who has this knowledge and these skills for these sessions is absolutely essential. There are lots of acronyms and jargon, so preparation along with experience really is key when carrying out these assignments.

I have worked for many IT and software companies over the years, including Telecom Italia SPA, Nortel Networks, Agilent Technologies, Hewlett Packard, and Reiss Romoli in L’Aquila who have provided many IT training courses.

These years of experience have provided valuable knowledge of the IT interpreting industry, and I am always pleased to put these skills into practice.

You may not be aware that I provide interpreting services for small groups and training sessions but this is an area in which I am often providing services, and having a highly qualified interpreter certainly pays dividends.

April is a month when Italy also celebrates new life…

Did you know that, according to legend, Rome was founded on April 21, 734 AD. So essentially, Rome’s birthday is this month!

The Natale di Roma isn’t celebrated with a national holiday in Italy, but it is marked in Rome with re-enactments and parades in the city. So, if seeing “real” gladiators on the streets of Rome appeals to you, book your flights, pronto!

I absolutely adore Rome, the city has been a huge part of my life: I studied in Rome, I lived in Rome, I was married in Rome and my children were born in Rome! Despite being born in Sicily myself, I feel at least 50% Roman!

Italy also celebrates the Festa della Liberazione this month, on April 25th, which marks the end of Nazi occupation during WWII along with the end of fascist rule in Italy. This momentous date is celebrated with a national holiday in Italy and marked by parades across the country, organised by the National Partisan Association of Italy.

Nurturing Growth Mindset Habits

Those who know me, know I am a champion of personal development and this year I embraced this fully, by enrolling on a three-month course with the brilliant Ruth Kearns Woollman (PhD, PCC, CPCC), a Leadership Development Coach and experienced trainer.

Ruth is an advocate of the concept of the growth mindset and her course, titled “Growing in Resilience Together”, has focused on recognising the signs and triggers of stress, the importance of energy (rather than time) as a key to success, and nurturing growth mindset habits.

She describes the programme as suitable for “… professionals who want to build their resilience, who are committed to working on themselves and open to giving and receiving support.”

It has been so eye opening to take this course with my fellow attendees, and it is lovely to work as part of a group. As Ruth herself says, “… a consistent piece of feedback I get is about the power of the dynamic of the group.” I am starting to put her practices into place during my working week and I hope that this will make me more productive and able to take on new challenges without fear, whilst feeling less stress, having more time and increased energy…

It is, perhaps, a lot to ask from a three-month course, but I am feeling so positive about this year, I expect some of the important changes Ruth has initiated will certainly pay dividends on a professional and personal level!

This testimonial underscores the value of having a deep understanding of company jargon and technicalities. As an interpreter, it's not just about translating words but also about conveying the nuances and specificities of a corporate language. This understanding is key to ensuring that every participant is on the same page, fostering a cohesive and well-informed environment.

I also believe it's crucial to make a difference, not just through technical expertise but also by forging connections. These connections are built on the foundation of trust, which is central to my approach in event settings like EWC meetings.

From Dior Elegance to European Factories: An Itali From Dior Elegance to European Factories: An Italian Interpreter's EWC Plant Visit

It's not every day that you find yourself seamlessly transitioning from the high-end glamour of iconic brands like Christian Dior Couture to the industrious heart of manufacturing giants.

Just a few weeks ago, I worked as an Italian interpreter during a plant visit at a cutting-edge plant.

This facility isn't just any manufacturing site; it's a world-renowned testing centre for bearings used in wind turbines, where innovation meets precision on a grand scale.

Imagine bearings so large, up to two meters in diameter – an absolutely colossal feat of engineering!

As an Italian #interpreter, I was the linguistic bridge, ensuring that ideas and strategies were effectively communicated across language barriers.

It's experiences like these that remind me why I cherish my profession so much. Every assignment is a new adventure, a chance to delve into the fascinating intricacies of various industries.

"Every day is a learning day," indeed, and this day was no exception.

Here's to the beauty and innovation of industry and the power of communication that drives it!

As we wrap up the week, I want to share a quote th As we wrap up the week, I want to share a quote that has always resonated with me and carries a powerful message: "Allow yourself to be a beginner. No one starts off being excellent."

In our careers and professional development, it's easy to feel the pressure to be an expert from day one. However, the reality is, that even the most accomplished professionals were once beginners too.

The journey of growth and self-improvement is a remarkable one. It's a path filled with challenges, learning experiences, and moments of self-discovery. We all start somewhere, and it's okay to be a beginner - in fact, it's a beautiful and essential part of the process.

Being a beginner means you have the opportunity to learn, adapt, and evolve. It's a chance to build a strong foundation and gather the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in your chosen field. So, if you're just starting out on a new career path or facing a steep learning curve, remember that it's all part of the journey. Allow yourself to embrace the beginner's mindset, stay curious, and never stop learning.

As you continue to grow and develop, you'll realise that excellence is a result of persistence, dedication, and a willingness to learn from your mistakes.

Legal translations, especially for tribunal trials Legal translations, especially for tribunal trials, require more than linguistic proficiency. They demand an intricate understanding of both languages' legal nuances, a sharp eye for detail, and an unwavering commitment to accuracy.

Providing Great Service Hello everyone! I often Providing Great Service

Hello everyone!
I often write about my love of interpreting; it is a career that is entirely fulfilling to me, taking me to interesting places, enabling me to understand and work with a variety of different industries and to meet fascinating people along the way.
Perhaps because of this, I pride myself in providing the absolute best service to my clients. Ensuring that I always give 100% to every assignment is my USP and I go the extra mile for all my customers.
So today, I thought I’d share with you my top three – very easy – ways that you can set yourself apart from your peers.
1. LISTEN
Listening sounds incredibly simple, but really listening is actually quite a skill. When taking a brief for an assignment, understanding my client’s requirements is often more than the words that I write on my paper. I listen to their intonation, to the language they use, and sometimes to the subtext. With this, I can ensure that my interpretation matches the style of my client, the words I use mirrors their language, and the content picks up on any nuances.

2. PREPARE
Benjamin Franklin famously said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail” and these are words by which I live my life! I spend a huge amount of time ensuring that before EVERY assignment I have read all the literature given to me by the client, along with their websites, LinkedIn pages, and any other content around the subject which I can source!

3. FOLLOW UP
Once an assignment has been completed, it is good practice to send a follow up email to the project manager. In my correspondence I always thank them for hiring me, but I also find this is also a great opportunity, as an interpreter with a unique view and insight into their project, to provide feedback, if relevant. This could be on the structure of the event, any technical aspects or observations I noted that may assist my client with their own client relationship.

What are your top tips for providing excellent service to make you your client’s number one choice? I’d love to hear them!

Empowering Global Communication: A Client-Centric Empowering Global Communication: A Client-Centric Experience

A couple of weeks ago, I had the distinct pleasure of interpreting once again for the dynamic team at Ideandum, an Italian dental marketing company, during their "Generate Value" course.
The course attracted participants from various dental practices, and it was exciting to witness their enthusiasm for the content being presented.

The experience with Ideandum was unforgettable.
Not only was I embraced as a part of their vibrant team, (I was even featured on a dedicated slide!) but the mutual respect and understanding we shared made the entire event an absolute joy to work on.

I'm incredibly humbled and grateful for the feedback I received from attendees and Ideandum team members. It's always heartwarming to know that my contributions genuinely make a difference.

Wondering about the attendees' feedback? Swipe through the slider.

Being recognised not just as a voice in the background but as an integral part of the communication process truly touched my heart. This event was a reminder of the impact that effective interpretation can have, bridging gaps and ensuring that valuable insights resonate across diverse audiences.

I'm truly grateful to Ideandum for providing me with this opportunity. Here's what he had to say:

🌟 "Luciana is simply the best!!! We collaborated on a marketing course in the UK. She expertly handled the simultaneous translation, and her work was impeccable. All the students were extremely satisfied and showered us with compliments. Beyond her outstanding professionalism and competence, she brings a unique blend of empathy and friendliness to her work. I would recommend her services to anyone."

A big THANK YOU to the Ideandum team and all the dental practices represented! I look forward to more collaborations in the future. 💬🌍

Efficient, friendly and diligent, she ensured the speakers and moderators for the live Q&A felt totally at ease and brought a natural flow to the on-stage conversations. Luciana worked hard before the event to make sure she was totally prepared for the discussion. Live Q&A with an interpreter is never particularly easy, but Luciana made it look as effortless as possible and the room was grateful for that. It would be such a shame to miss out on these important perspectives if we didn’t have people like her to interpret. Thank you, Luciana, I look forward to working with you again."

I'm truly humbled by Holly's kind words! 🙏 It was an honor to interpret for Luigi Brugnaro, the Mayor of Venice, at The Economist Group's Sustainability Event in London.

Facilitating seamless communication is my passion, and I'm thrilled to have contributed to the success of the event. Looking forward to more exciting collaborations in the future! 🌍
