Every industry speaks its own language

🌍 Every industry speaks its own language. 🌍

One of my favourite quotes comes from the writings of Osho:

“There are subtle nuances to words. Those nuances are lost in translation, and those are the real things.”

From technical terminology to witty office banter, business speak is packed full of nuance. This does not pose a challenge to those in the know. But when interpreting it, the true meaning often gets lost along the way. 💭

As a certified interpreter and translator, my job is to ensure that this nuance is perfectly preserved.

So whenever I prepare for an interpreting assignment, I make it my priority to speak my clients’ language — not just English or Italian, but their industry jargon as well. 📈

Whether the assignment involves asset management, pharmaceuticals or an international legal case, I immerse myself in the specifics so by the time I take my seat at the interpreting booth, legal panel or negotiating table, I am fluent in the jargon that punctuates the industry.

Can you think of a term or a phrase that is widely used across your industry, but puzzling to anyone outside it?

Watch your language! How language and technology evolve – RSI English – Italian services

Watch your language!

As an interpreter, I love watching how language evolves over time. Just twelve months ago, the word ‘lockdown’ was socially distanced from our everyday vocabulary! Now, most of us use it on a daily basis.

This is just one example, but it perfectly encapsulates the living nature of language. Even when we don’t notice it, language is continuously moving and changing with the times. 🌍

It comes as no surprise that the dynamic world of interpretation and translation changes alongside it. Working in language access services for over 20 years, I have seen my fair share of change and innovation, and thanks to technology, my services are more accessible now than ever before.

I am offering RSI (Remote Simultaneous Interpreting) Engllish – Italian services to individuals, and businesses of all shapes and sizes, from arbitrations to online events to conferences and panel discussions.

Together, let’s make the most of this digital-first world, and share your products and services across international borders. Click here to find out more: https://italianinterpreter.london/my-offer/interpreter/#rsi-interpreting 🚀

Britain’s place in #EWCs post-Brexit – here’s what you need to know…

Britain’s place in #EWCs post-Brexit – here’s what you need to know…

Following the completion of the transition period, the UK is now legally considered as a “third country” in terms of its relationship with EU member states.

What this means in practice for companies that have not yet established a European Works Council, is that only people employed in EEA countries can ask their employer to set up an EWC. So, if you are employed in the UK you cannot ask for one to be set up.

However, according to the UK Government’s advice, you can be involved as a UK representative IF your company decides they want to include representatives from the UK. If they do, you will still be entitled to paid time off to carry out your role.

If your company already has an established EWC and you became a UK representative of your company’s EWC before 1 January 2021, you can continue to be involved IF your organisation continues to permit membership.

Again, you will still be entitled to paid time off to carry out your role.

Negotiating Britain’s place within EWCs will no doubt remain a hot topic for some time to come.

What are your thoughts?
