December 2021

🎄 December 2021 🎄 Let’s look back on a fruitful 2021 🎆 News & Best Wishes Italian Interpreter London

As usual during the holidays, time seems to have picked up speed – and all of a sudden, the year is coming to a close!

In the final few days of 2021, I would like to reflect on an incredibly rewarding year, thank our clients and colleagues for their continued support, and celebrate everything we have accomplished together over the last twelve months.

After the week we’ve had, I think it’s safe to say we could all use a bit of holiday cheer…

As concerns about the Omicron variant sweep across the globe, international travel plans are once again up in the air – and a glance through my inbox over the last week reveals that the events industry in the UK is gearing up for cancellations.

One silver lining is that by now, we’re well-versed in remote working and learning. Remote events may no longer be the novelty they used to be, but they’re far more engaging and accessible.

(Side-note: if you’ve suddenly found yourself in urgent need of a remote Italian interpreter for your virtual event, it would be my honour to save the day if my schedule allows!)

And while there may not be many parties for hosting, there are still marshmallows for toasting this December! 🎶

No matter what happens, we will still get to enjoy the little moments that make up the magic of this holiday season. I have already decorated my Christmas tree and decked out my office in fairy lights – so that every time I sit down at my desk, I am reminded of the joy, magic and sparkle that make this time of year so special.

A very warm welcome (and congratulations) to our new clients!

I recently had the pleasure of working on a translation project with Italian life sciences startup, Patchai. Led by the great mind Alessandro Monterosso, the team at Patchai are the creators of a cutting-edge virtual companion for patients in clinical trials.

This technology “enables clinical research and standard clinical practice to become more humane, connected and streamlined.” What a wonderful example of how we can leverage technology to reach goals that benefit the greater good of humanity! Patchai is living proof that innovation can be carried out not simply for innovation’s sake, but with empathy as a guiding principle.

Throughout the course of our translation project, I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the startup’s work and mission – which is why I was thrilled to hear about their recent acquisition by international healthcare consultancy, Alira Health. Bravo to all at Patchai – I can’t wait to see what’s next!

Throughout the final quarter of this year, I also supported global healthcare company Vernacare on a number of remote interpreting assignments. Vernacare are pioneers of sustainable infection prevention solutions in healthcare environments. Their products help to improve the lives of patients, residents and healthcare professionals globally.

Interpreting assignments weren’t the only ones keeping me busy as the year drew to a close. I’ve also continued to offer translation services to clients on a wide range of matters. Most recently, I had the pleasure of working on the translation of confidential documents for global healthcare company, Organon, which is on a mission to support women’s health worldwide through the provision of innovative healthcare solutions. Due to the nature of my profession, I am often provided with sensitive materials, and it is my ethical duty to ensure that confidentiality and discretion are maintained every step of the way.

In my career as an interpreter and translator, I have worked with some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical, biotechnology and life sciences companies in the world, including Pfizer, Novartis, and AstraZeneca. I’m endlessly impressed by the problem-solving attitude and fast pace of innovation displayed by their team members – as well as their curiosity about the world around us and the various ways we can improve it. To find our more about the healthcare translation and interpretation projects I have worked on, I invite you to take a look at my website.

Which reminds me: the clock is ticking on 2021, meaning now is the time to book in any last-minute projects before the Christmas holidays, or to get a head start on your 2022 to-do list. Let’s team up to make your message heard by all the right people this winter.

Raise a toast to new connections!

If the events of the last two years have taught us anything, it’s the value of connection. Surrounding ourselves with positive, inspiring people is one of the best ways to boost both our personal and professional lives. I have long been an advocate of joining relevant professional bodies, memberships and associations in order to make new connections and stay up to speed with your industry.

On that note, I am delighted to announce that I have joined the UK Confederation by Confassociazioni, whose mission is to ‘represent the interests of our members to key business stakeholders and influencers across all business sectors’. If you’re one of my fellow 1.2 million members, I would love it if you replied to this email to let me know!

The power of networking is unmatched – so no matter what sector you are in, why not make it your new year’s resolution to join a professional membership and put yourself out there in 2022?

2021 My top highlights!

January

I spent an enlightening time at the virtual TerpSummit2021 discussing what lies in store for my sector, and it was wonderful to attend such an insightful and timely event with my colleagues. Whether I’m speaking at a conference or in my home office, staying one step ahead of the trends and latest developments in interpretation and translation means I can continue providing the highest-quality service to my clients on every assignment.

February

With the help of my talented team, I gave my website a spring clean, with new content and navigation to help clients find out more about my offers, skills and experience. It was a great opportunity to dip into the world of video, and I’m still so proud of the brand video we created – it sits front and centre on my homepage!

HAPPY WATCHING!

March

Ongoing restrictions in the UK led to a rise in RSI assignments, meaning I spent many early spring days interpreting panels, conferences and virtual hearings over Zoom. Oh, and balancing my screen time out with walks around the neighbourhood, of course!

Very few sectors have been left unscathed by Covid-19, and the legal sector is no different. With a huge backlog of cases to work through, more and more professionals have adopted virtual solutions to meet the demand.

Even before Covid-19, international hearings were logistically complicated in person, and virtual solutions were growing increasingly popular. This is why sector-specific interpreters are so important: they’re experienced with arbitrations and hearings but also have the technical ability to operate efficiently.

Having supported virtual hearings and arbitrations pre-Covid-19, I can see that this area is booming, and since March I have been receiving various enquiries for these assignments.

Legal interpretation and translation are one of my areas of particular expertise. Can I help with your next virtual hearing or arbitration?

Take a look at my portfolio of legal assignments for more details:

April

In April, I had the pleasure of interpreting the International Panel on Climate Change. The IPCC is a United Nations body whose primary role is to assess the science related to climate change – a topic about which I’m deeply passionate. Climate change is possibly the biggest issue we are facing right now, and being in the centre of the action is always a powerful and humbling experience.

May

London International Disputes Week (#LDIW21) was held on May 10th-14th. To celebrate, I joined a fascinating webinar on one of my favorite specialist topics: the latest changes to arbitration rules.

London is highly regarded as a global hub for international #disputes resolution. Not only are there a roster of experienced lawyers practising on UK soil, but court reporters, subject matter experts and legal interpreters too (like me!)

June

June was a busy month across the UK! Between the excitement of the Euros, lockdown restrictions lifting across the country, and a surge in overall requests for translation services following Brexit, we at One Stop Language Solutions had our work cut out for us. But the buzz of newly-reopened shops, restaurants and parks made it all the more worth it!

July

With a foot firmly in both England and Italy, the final of the European Championship was always going to be a win-win for me! In the viewing household, half of the living room was Italian and the other half were English. We even had friends and family dialing in virtually to cheer on their team! It was a fabulously exciting tournament from start to finish and reminded me of the great privilege I had in the past to work with footballing heroes like Francesco Totti, Andrea Pirlo and Sir Geoff Hurst. They were all dream assignments, and perhaps there will be more to come in the future – fingers crossed!

August

August kept me busy with many medical, pharmaceutical and life sciences assignments. These encompass a vast area with many diversified branches: each project requires an exacting effort, research, preparation and accuracy. And any error can cause delays or even missed approval for selling specific medications in certain markets, so I meticulously spend time making sure everything is perfectly prepared for my clients’ proposals and launches.

Like so many of us, I enjoyed a summer staycation this year, heading to Cornwall with my family. We were lucky enough to get that summer feeling with the wonderful weather… and vivid blue waters, crab sandwiches and Cornish pasties made getting away an even bigger treat!

During my trip, I was inspired by the politics I love to follow so much, and that have been such a key part of my career for decades. When in Cornwall, I made a point to visit Carbis Bay, where the latest G7 Summit was held!

September

September marked my first post-lockdown business trip! After over twelve months of working remotely, I was thrilled to hop on a plane again to Basel, Switzerland, to interpret at a medical conference for a Swiss multinational pharmaceutical company I’ve had the pleasure of working with for over a decade! Being back in a booth to interpret English to Italian was pure joy.

Next, mid-September saw a truly incredible London Fashion Week. Every year I look forward to this fabulous glimpse into the minds of some of the most accomplished creatives in the world. Full of eminent names and rising stars, it’s an exhilarating look at the distinguished brands of the times. And during this time, I welcomed some of the most illustrious names in the fashion world into my own work – including Dior Couture UK, who selected me as their interpreter at their Journées Savoir-Faire event to help showcase their iconic Lady Dior bag. It was such an honour to be at the centre of it all!

October

In October, I found myself heading to Basel, Switzerland for my first post-lockdown international business trip!

Those of you who have already travelled abroad post-lockdown will be familiar with the tension arising with ensuring vaccination passports and paperwork are all present and accounted for, and whether your documents will all be accepted as per usual at customs.

But I didn’t have to worry for long – it was like returning to an old friend, as I interpreted for a Swiss multinational pharmaceutical company I’ve had the pleasure of working with for over a decade!

Holding a four-day medical conference in Basel, it was wonderful to get back in the booth, interpreting English to Italian and vice versa throughout the event. This time also allowed me to gather my thoughts and reflect on the impact Covid has had upon my colleagues and I as interpreters.

November

The UK and Italy joined forces as the co-presidents of the COP26 summit. This summit brought together the United Nations to reach an agreement on how we’ll be tackling climate change – most likely one of our last chances to prevent many of the worsening disasters we’ve already witnessed in the tragic events of recent wildfires, flooding, and hurricanes.

In personal news, I received a wonderful testimonial from Mr. Mark Daniels after helping him purchase his new property in Italy. From liaising with the seller, architect and notaries to managing phone calls and translating legal and financial documents, I was able to be there for Mark every step of the way – afterwards, he wrote that ‘Luciana certainly went the extra mile on our behalf, we would have no hesitation in using her services in future, nor recommending her’!

As an interpreter and translator, I have the privilege of being there for people at some of the biggest moments of their lives. It was a wonderful experience to work with Mark, and to help him turn his process of moving abroad from a stressful situation to an exciting and even enjoyable event.

December

Working for Consensus Working Law Ltd from the 6th – 10th December, I interpreted at an arbitration case, after assisting with the translation of the witness statement. Over the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity of developing a strong relationship with the client in this trial, and they are very pleased with the service. The client even commented ‘Your services have been invaluable!’.

A highlight reel as bright as this one is hard to beat, but I am hopeful for everything 2022 has in store! I would love to hear what your top highlight (personal or professional) has been – please reply to this post and let me know! It’s always such a pleasure to read through your responses.

Sometimes we get so busy chasing the next milestone—at work, in life, or in our dreams—that we forget to check if it’s still the right path for us. If we don’t pause, we might end up feeling stuck or burned out.

👉 Success is reaching your goals.
👉 Happiness is loving what you’ve achieved.

Here’s a simple challenge for today:

1️⃣ Take a few minutes to think about your current goals.
2️⃣ Ask yourself: Are these goals taking me closer to what I really want in life?
3️⃣ Make one small change or action to stay on the right path.

Both success and happiness matter, but they work best when they go hand in hand. 🌈

What’s the most interesting industry I’ve work What’s the most interesting industry I’ve worked with? 🍫🌴⚖️

🤔 This question always gets me thinking because every industry offers its own surprises. From the precision of pharmaceuticals and legal to the fast-paced creativity of media, interpreting brings such diverse challenges and joys. Renewable energy, fashion, religious institutions—all these industries have taught me something unique about people, cultures, and the power of communication.

But if I’m honest, it’s not just the industry that makes the work fascinating. It’s the moments—the exchange of ideas, the breakthroughs in understanding, the connections that shape decisions and impact lives. For me, the “most interesting” is wherever people are willing to share their world and let me help bridge the gap! 💘

Whilst many people wind down towards Christmas, I always thrive on experiencing the opposite, and this week has been one of the busiest I have had for a long time!

I have been coming to Zurich at this time every year for as long as I can remember, to work with a wondertul client who treat me like one of their own, and it is a joy to work with them.
There is something about returning to a familiar area (I always stay at the same hotel, often visit the same restaurants and work with the same interpreting team) that makes the experience so relaxed and enjoyable.
I work on European Works Council meetings quite frequently, but this particular client is always brilliant to work with at these events - and not only because they provide the most delicious snacks!
Alongside the EWC meetings, which were enjoyable in themselves, I also managed to schedule a brilliant evening catching up with some colleagues at an amazing restaurant in the heart of Zurich, Fusio. It is such a cool place, with a brilliant vibe - I would highly recommend it if you are in Zurich.

What’s been the most unexpected industry or place you’ve worked in? I’d love to hear your stories! 🌟

Planning a multilingual event but unsure which int Planning a multilingual event but unsure which interpretation style will best serve your audience? Let’s break down the two most widely-known modes of interpreting:

🔄 Simultaneous Interpreting - “Translating while listening”
In this method, the interpreter translates the speaker’s words in real-time, often just a few seconds behind. This style is common in high-stakes settings like conferences, where speed and flow are essential. Imagine hearing the speaker and interpreter almost simultaneously—it’s a skill that takes intense focus and rapid mental processing.

⏱️ Consecutive Interpreting - “Listening, then translating”
Here, the interpreter listens to the speaker and waits until a pause (or after the full statement) to deliver the translation. This style is ideal for interviews, courtrooms, or smaller meetings, where there’s more room for pauses and detail.

Both styles require unique skill sets and can be chosen based on the needs of the setting and audience. 🌐

So next time you’re planning a multilingual event, consider which interpreting style best suits the occasion—speed or detail?

Can introverts excel in marketing? 🤔 People of Can introverts excel in marketing? 🤔

People often assume that marketing is all about being loud, outgoing, and always in the spotlight. But some of the best marketers are actually the quiet thinkers working behind the scenes.

In reality, marketing is not just about making noise—it’s about understanding people. Introverts are natural observers, skilled at reading between the lines and knowing when to speak and when to listen. They’re thoughtful planners, focusing on the details that make a message connect on a deeper level. They might not be the life of the party, but when it comes to building relationships and crafting strategies, introverts bring a unique strength in prioritising depth over volume.

🌍 On October 24th, we celebrate United Nations 🌍 On October 24th, we celebrate United Nations Day—a reminder of the power of diplomacy, collaboration, and the collective efforts to promote peace, security, and human rights worldwide.

And this year’s theme is ✨ “Cultivating a Culture of Peace”. ✨

As an interpreter, I’ve had the privilege of working in spaces where communication is key to fostering understanding and collaboration whether it’s at the international level or during conference meetings.

This year’s theme reminds me that cultivating peace isn’t just for diplomats or world leaders. It starts in everyday interactions, whether in a global organisation, a meeting room, or between colleagues. Every conversation is an opportunity to create understanding, resolve conflict, and build lasting relationships.

As United Nations Day approaches, I’m reflecting on how we can all contribute to peace—through our words, our actions, and our commitment to working together. Let’s all play our part, no matter how big or small.
